Even the first residents of our town, the Indians, recognized the tranquility of the area, as well as its relatively protected location from Gulf storms. Many Native American artifacts are still found each year which offer a glimpse of the tribes who lived or traveled through our region in the distant past.

Taylor County was created in 1856. It was named for Zachary Taylor, our twelfth president. Local lore says that Taylor forded his way across the Steinhatchee River around the 1830s, as did many pioneer families who brought their livestock and possessions across the water.

This small Florida community was at one time a small commercial fishing village where many residents worked in the fishing or timber logging industries.
